Mithras, the mighty god of the sun and ruler of priests of high degree, laid aside the cares of state to spend one night in revelry when the High Priests of Mithras celebrated their 118th annual Carnival entertainment Friday at La Nouvelle Orleans Ballroom in the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

The High Priests celebrated the comedies and genius of the bard of Stratford, William Shakespeare, and the glories of the Elizabethan Age.

Reigning over the festivities was Miss Leah Katherine Whann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert James Whann IV.

Maids of her majesty’s court were Misses Catherine Crawford Adams, daughter and stepdaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Roland Adams III and stepdaughter and daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Joshua Edward Lowentritt; Sarah Kent Agnew, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank de la Houssaye Agnew, Ella de los Reyes Baus, daughter of Mr. Mort Walker Baus and Mrs. Donna W. Mithras expanded its home-grown Honor Guard this year with the inaugural attachment of their junior Honor Guard members, including Masters Philip Nalty Hodges Jr. son of Mr. and Mrs. Hodges; Lawrence Noel Johnson III, son of Mr. and Mrs. Johnson Jr.; Michael Haydel Schmidt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Evans Schmidt; and Patrick Henican Silvia, son of Dr. and Mrs. Charles P. Silvia.

In addition to the Stars and Stripes, the Louisiana and Mithras flags, several flags of historical significance were presented.
