He was a beautiful boy who was promised a long life until he learned to know himself. He was loved by the wood nymph, Echo but he could not love until he once caught sight of an exquisite being in a pool of water as he bent over to drink. Filled with longing for this creature, he tried in vain to reach the figure in the water but could not drink. He dies of thirst and he transforms into the beautiful Narcissus leaning over the pool. This is a warning of obsession with oneself.
