The grand finale of Mardi Gras 2018 came Shrove Tuesday evening with the traditional "Meeting of the Courts" of the Mystick Krewe of Comus and Rex during the Comus bal masque at the Marriott Hotel.
Setting the dramatic scene for the customary climax to the revelry of the Carnival season in New Orleans was a myriad twinkling lights reflecting the glitter of thousands of rhinestones, paillettes and other brilliants.
Miss Anne Summers White, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Forrest White Jr., reigned as queen over the Comus festivities.
Maids of honor to her majesty were Misses Caroline Bailey Acomb, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dwight LeBlanc Acomb; Margaret Ann and Virginia Currin Bryan, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. James Randolph Bryan; Julia Murphy Grehan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hughes Grehan; Sarah Elizabeth Grehan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Brooke Yates Grehan; Charlotte Worley Huger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Middleton Huger; Layne Watkins Nalty, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Morgan Shaw Nalty; Mary Fleming England Redd, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edmund England Redd; Katherine Kergosien Simmons, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Lawrence Simmons Jr.; and Eugenie Cecile Whealdon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Burton Whealdon.
Pages to Comus were Masters Tucker Caldwell Graham, son of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Devon Graham III, and Nathaniel Pope Phillips IV, son of Mr. and Mrs. Phillips III.
Pages to her majesty were Masters Brandon Freret Favrot, son of Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Semmes Favrot; and Cooper Suthon Woods, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Cooper Woods.
Serving as chairman of the ball was Mr. Jonathan C. McCall.
When Rex 2018, Mr. Lynes R. "Poco" Sloss, and his queen, Miss Sarah Jane Holbrook Freeman, arrived at the Comus ball, the orchestra played Rex's theme song, "If Ever I Cease to Love." At that point, with Comus serving as escort to Miss Freeman, and with Rex escorting Miss White, the four monarchs and their entourage circled the ballroom floor in the double grand march.
Their majesties then took their places on the double throne bench, which was flanked by golden balustrades and golden urns filled with flowers.
At the conclusion of the ball, the curtain closed on the monarchs and drew to an end the merriment of Carnival 2018.
