As the National Park Service teams up with a Living History group and Nunez Community College this year, there’s more than ever to see, learn and do during the Battle of New Orleans commemoration. Here’s what’s happening.

Thursday, Jan. 7

Nunez Community College Auditorium (3710 Paris Road, Chalmette): Battle of New Orleans Historical Symposium 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Speakers, scholars and historical artifacts; free jazz lunch. Speaker schedule at www.nps.gov/ jela. Free.

Friday, Jan. 8

Chalmette Battlefield (8606 W. St. Bernard Highway, Chalmette): Special programs and activities 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. including a Chalmette Monument wreath-laying ceremony at 3 p.m. to honor the men who fought at the Battle of New Orleans. Meraux Living History Park (8207 Patricia St., Chalmette): Dec. 23, 1814, Night Battle re-enactment at 7 p.m. Parking and additional information at www.lalivinghistoryfoundation.com. $5.

Chalmette Battlefield (8606 W. St. Bernard Highway, Chalmette): 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Battlefield and visitor center open (no special activities). Free.

Chalmette Battlefield offsite parking information:

On Friday and Saturday, visitors to the Chalmette Battlefield must park at the St. Bernard Parish Government Center, 8201 W. Judge Perez Dr., Chalmette. Park in the rear of the building. There are free shuttles (handicapped accessible) to the battlefield. The first shuttle leaves the parking lot at 8:30 a.m. and the last leaves the battlefield at 4:30 p.m. each day.
