once on this island

Islanders gather for a talk in 'Once on This Island' at Le Petit.

Following its hit production of “Jelly’s Last Jam,” Le Petit Theatre opens its 101st season with the celebrated Caribbean musical “Once on This Island.”

Love abounds in this Tony Award-nominated show, composed by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty of “Ragtime” and “Seussical” fame, based on Rosa Guy’s 1985 novel “My Love, My Love: Or, the Peasant Girl.”

Guy took inspiration from Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid” in this bittersweet fable about a villager’s efforts to calm the nerves of a frightened child in the midst of a terrible French Antilles storm.

Could a topic be more relevant? Or a joyous event more welcome?

Le Petit Artistic Director Maxwell Williams directs an impressive cast that includes Shangobunmi Durotimi, Robert Diago D'oquim, Idella Johnson, Kebron Woodfin, and Lloyd Meekins.
