Michael McKelvey will be the new man behind the curtain at Tulane University’s Summer Lyric Theatre as the artistic director.

McKelvey, a professor of practice in the Newcomb Department of Music at Tulane, joined the faculty of the university this fall.

With a substantial résumé of theatrical endeavors as music and or voice director, McKelvey brings experience from Austin Musical Theatre, the State Theatre, Austin Playhouse, Austin Shakespeare and a co-founder of Summer Stock Austin.

He holds a doctoral degree from the University of Texas at Austin and served on the faculty of the Conservator of Performing Arts at Point Part University in Pittsburgh and St. Edward’s University in Austin.

McKelvey hopes to introduce young people to the thrill and terror of live vocal performance in his new post.

McKelvey takes over from retiring director B. Michael Howard, head of the musical theater program at Tulane University.
