Blockbuster authors including E.L. James of “50 Shades of Grey” and Lee Child of “Jack Reacher” are among the 700 writers scheduled to appear during the RT Booklovers Convention this weekend at the New Orleans Marriott.

Sponsored by RT Book Reviews, a national monthly, the event includes talks, workshops, panel discussions, and a chance to rub shoulders with best-selling writers at social events.

James, Child and many others will be present for the centerpiece of the convention, the Giant Book Fair, slated for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today, Saturday, May 17.

The event is open to the public for $5, free with a library card. Guests may buy books at the event or bring books from home (up to two per author) to have signed.

Because Saturday is also “Teen Day,” many of its events focus on authors of Young Adult (YA to those in the industry) books.

Three sessions of “YA Speed Reading” feature YA authors reading brief excerpts from their books for an audience. An interactive panel showcases popular YA authors discussing individual subgenres, including science fiction, romance, thrillers, and contemporary fiction.

A “Stump the Author” session provides an opportunity for young fans to pepper their favorite writers with trivia questions about their work.

On the social side, Penguin Books invites teens to a “Lemonade Social” to meet their favorite authors, and HarperTeen/Epic reads stages a “Teen Day Party” starring its stable of writers.

Teens who arrive early will receive a “goody bag” filled with books and other freebies (supplies are limited).

On Sunday, the focus shifts from teens to adult interests with the workshop “He Said, She Said: Romance Author Battle of the Sexes.” USA Today bestselling author Alice Clayton and former Mr. USA-turned-author Dr. Ivan Rusilko talk about how sexy scenes differ when penned by male and female writers.
