The schedule of the 2016 New Orleans Jazz Fest will be unveiled on Tuesday, Jan. 19. The announcement about the announcement was made via the festival’s Twitter account on Wednesday.
If past unveilings are any indication, the information should roll out late in the morning on the 19th.
For fans of the festival, the roster roll-out is a bit like Christmas in January. Months of speculation and rumors about who will perform give way to debates about the chosen acts. Headliners on the three biggest stages – Acura, Gentilly and Congo Square – tend to generate the most discussion.
One obvious question: Will anyone on this year’s schedule draw as massive a crowd as Elton John did in 2015?
The 2016 Jazz Fest – officially, it’s the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival presented by Shell – is April 22 to May 1 at the Fair Grounds.
This year’s announcement comes a few days later than the 2015 announcement. Jazz Fest’s producers were likely either tidying up a few loose ends, or waiting to coordinate their announcement with one or more major acts’ announcements of their own 2016 touring schedules. Perhaps not coincidentally, the Bonnaroo festival is also scheduled to reveal its roster on Jan. 19.
Festival producers strive to keep bookings secret until all are revealed at once. However, plenty of rumors about potential 2016 headliners have made the rounds, including some started by artists themselves. Paul Simon let slip at a benefit concert at Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre late last year that he would be back in town for Jazz Fest.
We’ll soon find out who will join him at the Fair Grounds.
