Two tribute concerts are planned to remember music instructors as part of the Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp 20th Anniversary Festival Series.
A tribute concert honoring Alvin “Bat” Batiste will be conducted at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, in Roussel Hall at Loyola University, 6363 St. Charles Ave., in New Orleans as part of the festival series.
Batiste was a jazz clarinetist who died May 6, 2007. He taught at Southern University in Baton Rouge, the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts and the Armstrong Jazz Camp.
The tribute concert, under the musical direction of NOCCA and Jazz camp alumni Calvin Johnson and Gregory Agid, will feature a performance by Branford Marsalis and poetry by Batiste’s widow, Edith.
A tribute concert honoring the late Clyde Kerr Jr. will take place at 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, in Freda Lupin Memorial Hall at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, 2800 Chartres St.
Kerr was a jazz trumpeter who died Aug. 6, 2011. He taught at NOCCA and at the Armstrong Jazz Camp.
The tribute concert will feature performances by trumpeter Christian Scott and pianist Courtney Bryan, both of whom are Jazz Camp alumni.
