The Roots will play the Essence Music Festival Saturday night, but its drummer and leader Questlove will play a DJ set later that night at Tipitina’s. The Roots’ albums suggest how broad his tastes are, and his DJ sets can be nights of sublimely chosen, lesser known tracks with killer grooves, or they can be ADD sugar rushes as he jams together hits from the rock ’n’ roll era. Both are very entertaining. With DJ Soul Sister.

Lindsey Stirling introduced herself to the world as a dancing violinist in 2010 on “America’s Got Talent.” She has combined her violin with hip-hop and EDM, and the resulting videos on YouTube garner millions of views — 98 million alone for 2012’s “Crystalize.” She’s touring in support of her new album “Shatter Me,” with a title song that has been viewed more than 9 million times since it was released two months ago.

The modern prog rock band formed in 2005 to tell leader Casey Crescenzo’s extended stories that could not be contained by one album. The band recorded Acts I through III of a story that is not done yet, but it took a break to cut an album of color-themed songs, “Color Spectrum.” Crescenzo didn’t return to his magnum opus with last year’s “Migrant,” the first of the band’s albums to not have a unifying theme at all. It is also the band’s most concise, but it remains sonically dynamic and musically adventurous.
