Everyone knows summer is prime time for movies. That’s especially true for families, as kids are out of school and looking for fun.

This summer, area theaters and the Audubon Zoo are presenting movie series for kids and families, with programming ranging from the classics shown at New Orleans’ oldest continuously operating movie theater, the Prytania, to recent hits screened at the zoo.

Area theaters presenting kids’ series include The Grand Theatre Esplanade 14 in Kenner, Regal Covington Stadium 14 and The Grand Theatre Slidell 16. The city of Kenner gets into the movie exhibition business, too, with a screening of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” on July 23 at Muss Bertolino Stadium.

Also, the Tipitina’s Foundation and newly restored Orpheum Theater are presenting screenings Mondays and Tuesdays. The Tip’s series is free.

Schedules and information about summer movie series are listed below.

Dinner and a ZOOvie

In its fourth summer, the Audubon Zoo’s Dinner and a ZOOvie expands to 10 screenings, continuing through Aug. 19. Also, the Cool Zoo/Gator Run water ride is open during movie nights.

Dinner and a ZOOvie drew a record 2,000 attendees to its screening of the 2013 Disney hit, “Frozen.”

“We’ve had an amazing response to the ZOOvies,” said Chimene Grant, the Audubon Nature Institute’s vice president of marketing. “And with the addition of Gator Run last year, it’s become even more popular. People can go to Gator Run and then walk over to watch the movie.”

Doors open at 6 p.m. for both the movies and Cool Zoo/Gator Run. Movies start after 8 p.m. The Cool Zoo/Gator Run is open 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Movie admission is $6 per person (children under 2 free). Cool Zoo/Gator Run admission costs an additional $6 per person (children under 2 free). Info: audubonnatureinstitute.org/zoovie
