A former Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office colonel charged in an overbilling scheme involving off-duty deputy details pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in court Wednesday morning.

Roy Austin, 69, entered his plea before U.S. District Judge Kurt Engelhardt.

"I assume responsibility," Austin told Engelhardt.

The judge set sentencing for Aug. 3. Austin faces up to five years in prison but could receive a more lenient punishment due in part to his lack of a criminal history.

Austin and his attorney declined to comment after the hearing.
