Louisiana Army National Guard Blackhawk Helicopters dropped recycled Christmas Trees from Orleans Parish into Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge in New Orleans Wednesday.

The annual “Christmas Tree Drop” helps create new wetland habitat for the thousands of migratory waterfowl and wildlife and acts as a wave and wind barrier to protect wetlands. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service started the program and works cooperatively with the New Orleans Mayor’s Office of Environmental Affairs, New Orleans Department of Sanitation and the Louisiana Army National Guard to implement the project.
