A group of Tangipahoa Parish women have started an online petition asking schools delay the start of classes because of the intense heat.
According to WWL-TV, thousands have given their support. The group argues that temperatures in the mid- to upper 90s put their children in danger, especially when being on buses and participating in P.E. classes.
"Usually you have so many people no, yes, no, different opinions. This one has been overwhelmingly, we need this," Jennifer Slocum, an outspoken parent, told WWL-TV.
The group plans to bring their petition to Tuesday night's school board meeting.
