Also, a first-time scarecrow building and decorating contest is planned. The contest is open to youngsters 12 and younger, but adults may assist. There is no cost to enter. Scarecrows will be judged on creativity and originality. Prizes will be given for first through fourth places. For first place, the prize is $150; for second, $125; for third, $100; and for fourth, $50.
A frame will be provided for each scarecrow and delivered to the child’s school as soon as an entry form is submitted. Rebar will be placed in the ground at the park, and each entry will have a 5-by-5-foot area for the exhibit.
No commercial costumes, rubber masks or plastic masks will be accepted. All entries must be handmade.
All entries should include a laminated sign no larger than 8½ inches by 11 inches indicating the name of the contestant, his or her school and the name of the scarecrow.
The scarecrows must be set up between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Oct. 24; judging will begin at 5 p.m. Ribbons will be placed on the winning entries and the prizes will be brought to the winners Oct. 28.
