Man accused of taking bar patrons hostage

Edward Schlumbrecht, 52, of Metairie, was arrested and accused of firing several shots and taking several people hostage early Saturday inside the Turtle Lounge in the 8000 block of Karen Street in Metairie, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said.

Schlumbrecht was booked on 18 counts of attempted murder, 18 counts of false imprisonment, 18 counts of aggravated assault, one count of illegal discharge of a weapon and one count of possession of a firearm in an alcohol beverage outlet.

The Sheriff’s Office said Schlumbrecht walked into the Turtle Lounge armed with an AK-47 assault weapon, a .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun and a .38-caliber Derringer. Once inside, it said, he fired several shots. No one was injured.

Customers fleeing the business told deputies that an armed gunman was holding numerous hostages. A few of the hostages escaped by jumping over a wooden fence behind the bar.

Sgt. Al West opened a line of communication with the man, who said he was going to kill everybody, said Col. John Fortunato, a Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

As a SWAT team began arriving, a woman ran out of the bar yelling, “They got him.” One of the hostages had jumped on the gunman, overpowered him and taken the AK-47 from him; other customers assisted in disarming him.

Fortunato said there were 18 people inside the bar when the incident began.

Crime scene technicians recovered three spent pistol cartridges and one spent rifle cartridge.

Fortunato said it was later learned that the gunman was angry with a neighbor who was in the lounge at the time.
