An armed robbery was thwarted late Sunday when Bud’s Broiler employees fought a man attempting to rob the restaurant, police said.

Just before 11 p.m. Sunday, Ismael “Mike” Naranjo, 43, entered Bud’s Broiler at 500 City Park Ave. and allegedly ordered employees to give him money from the cash register, the New Orleans Police Department said in a news release. He then went around the counter and began removing money from the register, NOPD said.

As he attempted to flee, two employees wrestled him to the ground, NOPD said, and attempted to subdue him. Naranjo was able to jump into a white 1996 Dodge pickup and leave the scene. Restaurant employees recovered some of the cash stolen after the scuffle, NOPD said.

Around 3:30 a.m., police received a call that a man was sitting inside a white truck bleeding from the head in the 700 block of Howard Avenue. Officers recognized the vehicle, and Naranjo was transported to the hospital with lacerations to the head.

Naranjo was linked to the robbery from evidence he left at the scene, NOPD said. Once he is treated and released, he will be booked with one count of first-degree robbery.

Naranjo is believed to be responsible for similar robberies in the Third District, NOPD said.

According to a WWL-TV report, Bud's General Manager Mel Ziegler said she's proud of her employees but "don't do it again."
