Metairie resident Liba Kornfeld, the director of Jewish Family Life for the Uptown Jewish Community Center, sent me an email last week asking me to remind area residents that the annual Harriet Kugler Memorial Mah-Jongg Tournament is Sunday at the JCC, 5342 St. Charles Ave., New Orleans.

Check-in begins at 10:30 a.m. and the tournament is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is open to both beginners and experienced mah-jongg players.

Before the tournament, brunch will be served and there will be information about the history of mah-jongg — a Chinese game, played usually by four people, with rectangular pieces called “tiles.” The object is to collect winning sets of the tiles, as in card games like gin rummy.

Also, mah-jongg historian and art enthusiast Gregg Swain will share details from the book “Mah-Jongg: The Art of the Game.”

Registration begins at $35 per person.

To register or for more information, call the JCC at (504) 897-0143 or go to www.nojcc.org.
