Parents use drugs, pass out in car with kids

Jefferson Parish authorities said a mother and father are behind bars after they passed out from using heroin in a parked car in Metairie, WWL-TV reported. Their two young children were in the car with them at the time, according to deputies.

The incident happened Sunday afternoon near Bonnabel and Veterans boulevards.

The parents apparently had a bad reaction to the heroin and passed out, said Col. John Fortunato, a Sheriff’s Office spokesman. Their 4-month-old and 11-month-old sons were in the car with them at the time.

People passing by became concerned when they saw the couple passed out in the car and called the Sheriff’s Office, Fortunato said.

Deputies awakened the parents and placed them under arrest. They face counts of endangering a child, having drugs and paraphernalia in the presence of a child, and possessing heroin, among other charges.

The Sheriff’s Office did not immediately release the identity of the mother and father.

The two children were taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons, Fortunato said, but they suffered no injuries.
