Gerard “Jerry” Amato, a chef and co-owner of the nationally known Mother’s Restaurant, died Saturday, according to a report. He was 65.

The restaurant announced Amato’s death on Facebook, and a restaurant spokesman confirmed to WWL-TV that Amato died after a battle with cancer.

Amato and his brother, John, purchased Mother’s Restaurant from the founders’ children, Simon and Mary “Mother” Landry, WWL reported.

A New Orleans native, Amato later put his own spin on classic dishes, including jambalaya, crawfish etouffee and bread pudding.

Mother’s Restaurant will be closed Thursday for a memorial, WWL reported. Funeral arrangements are pending.
