Driver dies after Causeway crash
The body of a car crash victim was found Sunday inside a vehicle that went over the railing of the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway into the water, according to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Divers with the Sheriff’s Office recovered the car Sunday afternoon. The driver, who was believed to be the lone occupant, was still in the vehicle.
The Toyota sport utility vehicle was traveling on the southbound span of the Causeway about 10:30 a.m. when it veered from its lane and flipped over the railing of the bridge, officials said.
The accident happened near the 16-mile marker, which is about 8 miles from the north shore.
Deputies with the Sheriff’s Office’s Marine Division searched the area in boats and found the SUV near the drawbridge.
St. Tammany Fire District No. 4 personnel extricated the body, which was turned over to the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office for identification and family notification.
The crash is also being investigated by Causeway police.
Man killed Sunday night in 7th Ward
A 26-year-old man was killed Sunday night at North Claiborne Avenue and St. Anthony Street in the 7th Ward, New Orleans police said about 8:20 p.m.
When NOPD officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim was shot multiple times and died on the scene.
Man shot in car in New Orleans East
A 24-year-old man was shot multiple times in his car Saturday night in New Orleans East, police said.
The man told police he was in his car at Shamrock Drive and Curran Boulevard about 9 p.m. when people he didn’t know started firing at him.
He drove himself to the Wind Run Apartments in the 12100 block of the North Interstate 10 Service Road. He then was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Aggravated rape reported in N.O. East
A 6-year-old girl reported an aggravated rape Saturday morning in New Orleans East, New Orleans police said.
The incident was reported about 11 a.m. in the 7000 block of Manchester Street, according to police.
Man cut Saturday night in Metairie
A man was stabbed or cut Saturday night in Metairie, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.
The parish’s 911 headquarters reported the cutting in the 300 block of North Laurel Street about 9 p.m.
The man’s injuries were not life-threatening.
Two armed robberies reported in Metairie
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office reported two armed robberies Saturday night in Metairie.
About 7 p.m., the local 911 headquarters reported that a Smoothie Time shop in the 3900 block of Veterans Boulevard had been held up at knife point.
An hour later, 911 headquarters reported a Shell station was robbed at gunpoint in the 3400 block of West Esplanade Avenue.
No injuries were reported in either incident.
