LE SANCTUARY BOOK CLUB: The scholarship program of Le Sanctuary Book Club will be the beneficiary of a celebrity party from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 5, at The Stage Door Canteen, 945 Magazine St., New Orleans.

Angela Young is founder and president of the club, which will award book scholarships to six graduating seniors and two graduate students this year.

Celebrity supporters are Robert Meachem, Joe Morgan and Nick Toon, of the New Orleans Saints, and reality TV personality “Goo Goo.”

MERCY ENDEAVORS SENIOR CENTER: A happy hour from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, will benefit Mercy Endeavors Senior Center.

The happy hour, a project of the Big Easy Cocktail Club, will be held upstairs at The Irish House, 1432 St. Charles Ave. A $5 donation will be collected at the door, with the money going toward Mercy Endeavors Senior Center’s programs for the local elderly in the Lower Garden District/Irish Channel.

During the happy hour, Irish House will offer its beers on tap for $3 per pint and buy-one-get-one fish and chips.

The BECC is a gypsy cocktail party that explores different local venues the second Tuesday of each month, fosters social awareness and supports micro-fundraising.

SPELLING BEE FOR ADULTS: A spelling bee for adults will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon Ave., Metairie

Adults 18 and older may participate in the event, which is free of charge and open to the public. Registration is not required.

FRENCH DOG CONTEST: Registration is open for the contest to find le chien le plus Français at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, July 14, as part of the Bastille Day Fête at Spanish Plaza on the New Orleans Riverwalk.

AARP DRIVING CLASS: A new AARP Smart Driving class will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 12 at East Jefferson General Hospital, 4200 Houma Blvd., Metairie.

The class is open to all AARP members and nonmembers 50 and older.

Those completing the class will receive a certificate that may qualify them for a discount from their automobile insurer good for up to three years. The cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for nonmembers.

SIERRA CLUB: Marisa Escudero, development director of the Land Trust for Louisiana, will be the guest speaker when the Sierra Club, New Orleans Group, meets at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, July 13, at the Nims Meeting Room at Audubon Zoo. The meeting room is next door to the zoo’s front gate entrance. The program is free and open to everyone.

The Land Trust of Louisiana works with community partners to create healthy and sustainable natural environments through land donations, conservation easements or purchases.

BETTER THAN EZRA ROCK ’N’ ROLL MINI GOLF: An after-school program at Bethune Elementary School in the Hollygrove neighborhood of New Orleans will be a beneficiary of a Rock ’n’ Roll Mini Golf event from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at the L’Auberge Casino Hotel, 777 L’Auberge Ave., Baton Rouge.

The event will feature an acoustic performance by Better Than Ezra, mini golf on a course built by See Hear Productions, an open bar, premium food stations and a silent auction.
