Police have secured an arrest warrant for the boyfriend of a woman who was shot to death Wednesday night in the bedroom of her home in the Desire area.

Officer Frank Robertson, a New Orleans Police Department spokesman, said investigators believe Kernell Harrell, 25, killed 23-year-old Melissa Hunter in the 3600 block of Metropolitan Street.

Hunter was dead at the scene when police responded to a call of a woman shot around 10:30 p.m.

Harrell has a history of domestic violence, according to court records. In September of 2010 he pleaded guilty to battery and violating a protective order. In May of 2014, he acknowledged committing two counts of domestic abuse, one for battery involving strangulation and the other for aggravated assault.

Detective Robert Barrere is leading the investigation into Hunter’s death. Police intend to book Harrell on a count of second-degree murder.
