A young man shot dead Monday morning on the West Bank was a student at Landry-Walker High School, according to people at the scene.

The New Orleans Police Department said the shooting occurred at 7:45 a.m. in the 3700 block of Garden Oaks Drive.

It said the victim was 17 years old.

Eyewitnesses said he was shot four times. He died at a hospital.

The victim was found in an apartment complex parking lot.

He apparently was shot while on his way to school. His backpack remained at the scene after his body was taken away.
