Registration is open for free BugBlitz expeditions to be held in connection with the Biodiversity University Science & Nature Festival from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the Barataria Preserve of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, 6588 Barataria Blvd., Marrero. Scientists, expert naturalists, researchers and National Park Service rangers will lead the BugBlitz expeditions, during which participants will identify, count and map the preserve insects. BugBlitz expeditions in the morning are for school groups; families and individuals may register for expeditions beginning at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Representatives of the Louisiana State Arthropod Museum will be on hand to work on insect identification and share their expertise.
Special programs in the afternoon will include a presentation on mosquitoes by Sarah Michaels, of the New Orleans Mosquito Control board, at 1:30 p.m. and a presentation on insects in the trees by Tim Scholwalter, of the Louisiana State University Department of Entomology, at 2:45 p.m. Both of these programs will be in the Visitor Center theater.
