Three-alarm fire reported in 7th Ward
A three-alarm fire engulfed a vacant building in the 7th Ward early Saturday morning, apparently spreading flames to two other buildings, according to the New Orleans Fire Department.
The department received a call about 3:45 a.m. reporting a fire in a vacant dwelling in the 1500 block of North Robertson Street. The first responders found a single-story, wood-framed fourplex engulfed in flames. The fire was already spreading to an unoccupied double next door, and second and third alarms were called.
While in the process of fighting those fires, the Fire Department received reports of another fire in the nearby 1400 block of Columbus Street. Crews headed to the initial call noticed the flames and were redirected to contain that fire.
The causes of the fires are under investigation; but there is a good chance that the Columbus Street fire was caused by heavy wind blowing embers from the North Robertson fires, officials said.
The blazes were all under control by 4:55 a.m.
Twenty-one NOFD units, carrying 62 personnel, responded to the fires. No injuries were reported.
