Deputy injured assisting with Slidell traffic stop

A St. Tammany Parish sheriff’s deputy suffered minor injuries early Tuesday while trying to help another deputy who stopped a vehicle that had been reported stolen from Slidell.

The Sheriff’s Office said a K-9 deputy with the Sheriff’s Office tried to make a traffic stop on a Ford Mustang, which had previously been reported stolen by Slidell police, about 3 a.m. in the parking lot of the Value Travel Inn on Yaupon Drive in Slidell

A fight broke out between the deputy and Frederick Jackson, the driver of the car, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Meanwhile, a passenger, Starlet Overby, jumped into the driver’s seat and attempted to drive away.

As Overby was leaving the parking lot, she crashed the vehicle into another Sheriff’s Office vehicle that responded to the scene. She also came close to striking the driver of that unit and her partner, the Sheriff’s Office said.

In an attempt to stop Overby, one of the deputies shattered the driver’s side window and was able to gain control of the vehicle and detain Overby.

With the assistance of Slidell police, K-9 deputies apprehended Jackson following a short chase on foot.

One deputy suffered minor injuries to his hand and was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated and released.

Overby, 40, of Slidell was booked with:

  • Three counts of attempted first-degree murder.
  • Two counts of aggravated flight from an officer.
  • Aggravated criminal damage.

Jackson, 34, of Slidell was booked with:

  • Two counts of resisting a police officer with force.
  • Illegal possession of stolen things.
  • Improper lane use.
  • Ignoring traffic signals

Rieckmann used email and text to lure victims into inappropriate sexual relationships, Reed’s office said.
