Authorities have identified the man fatally shot inside his home late Sunday in the area of New Orleans’ lakefront as 54-year-old Herbert Meyers.

Officers responding to a call of a burglary in progress found Meyers suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in his home in the 2400 block of Oriole Street at about 11 p.m. Sunday, New Orleans Police Department spokeswoman Hilal Williams said Monday.

While police initially reported Meyers’ adult son told them he had exchanged gunfire with two unidenfitied men “armed with AK-47s,” NOPD Homicide Section Commander Nicholas Gernon said he couldn’t not confirm that indeed happened.

Gernon said Meyer’s son called the police after walking in on the burglary when he returned home from running an errand.

Gernon said investigators are talking with neighbors to try to get any home-security camera footage that could assist in the case.

The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office released Meyers’ name about 10 a.m. Monday.
