Two women and three children were rescued Thursday morning from a burning home in New Orleans East.

Firefighters arrived about six minutes after receiving a call at 8:32 a.m. about a fire in the 13400 block of Lemans Street off Michoud Boulevard, according to Fire Department Capt. Edwin Holmes.

They found a two-story, double-family home with its front door in flames, Holmes said.

Firefighters raised a ladder to the second floor, where two women were trapped. One of them, under “extreme duress,” told firefighters she was two months pregnant. The women were both carried down safely and taken to a hospital for observation.

In the meantime, neighbors had already rescued three children — all of them 3 or younger — according to witnesses who described the scene to the NOFD.

The fire was brought under control by 8:53 a.m., according to the department.

The Red Cross came to the scene to assist the evacuated residents. Fire alarms inside the house alerted the occupants to the fire, according to Holmes. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
