More than 120 athletes with special needs participated in the St. Bernard Parish Special Olympics March 6 at Bobby Nuss Stadium at Chalmette High School. Track and field events included the 100-meter run, standing long jump and softball throw.
St. Bernard Parish School Board members Diana Dysart, Bill Egan, Cliff Englande and Katherine Lemoine joined in carrying the Special Olympics banner into the stadium. They were followed by Olympians and buddies from each of the schools.
Supporters on hand included St. Bernard Parish Sheriff James Pohlmann, Assessor Jaylyn Turner, Clerk of Court Randy Nunez, Judge Kim Jones and St. Bernard Parish Council members Monty Montelongo and Howard Luna.
“The Special Olympics is a wonderful opportunity for the St. Bernard Parish community to come together to celebrate all of our students,” Englande said. “The day would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our teachers and volunteers, especially Paul Frey, Robin Vieregge and Elizabeth Avenel.”
