Matthew Schexnayder, a fifth-grader at St. Joan of Arc School in LaPlace, won the honor of being St. John the Baptist Parish sheriff for a day in an auction at the school fair.

The big day was May 11, when Matthew was deputized by Sheriff Mike Tregre before an audience of his classmates. Police then escorted Matthew to the Sheriff’s Office, where he got a glimpse of life in law enforcement, including visits to the 911 communications center, the criminal investigations division and patrol headquarters.

He also enjoyed working with K-9 officer Titus and riding in the BearCat armored personnel carrier with the crisis management unit.
