Orleans Parish Coroner Dr. Jeffrey Rouse on Thursday released the name of a 22-year-old man fatally shot by police Tuesday night during an armed robbery in New Orleans East.

Autopsy results showed Jared Johnson was shot several times, Rouse said, and that one of the bullets pierced his heart and lung, causing internal bleeding that led to his death. Rouse classified the death as a homicide.

The armed robbery happened about 9:53 p.m. at the Dollar General store at 10600 Chef Menteur Highway. Police arrested 24-year-old Spencer Banks in connection with the robbery after finding him hiding in a car in the store’s parking lot. His brother, 23-year-old Halbert Adams, turned himself in to police on Wednesday.
