A man’s body was found stuffed inside a trash can in an empty lot in the Lower 9th Ward just after noon on Thursday.

Investigators are treating the case as an unclassified death. No obvious signs of trauma were found on the body, according to Police Department spokesperson Dawne Massey.

The discovery of the dead man startled neighbors, who said they had heard nothing out of the ordinary in the hours before police arrived to the 2300 block of Lizardi Street.

Steven Robinson, 58, said he watched as investigators from the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office removed the man’s body from the trash can.

“It’s evident that it had to be brought there,” Robinson said.

Robinson said that just the day before, he had been working in an adjoining lot and noticed nothing out of the ordinary.

Another nearby resident, 68-year-old Helen Tobias, said the body’s discovery came as a surprise to her too.

Tobias added that an overgrown mess of vegetation near where the body was found had long bothered her, and she hoped the city would now move to clear it.
