UPDATE 11:40 a.m. Tuesday: Orleans Parish Coroner Jeffrey Rouse has identified the man killed in the shooting as Clarence Johnson, 34. The cause of death was a gunshot wound.
One neighbor heard more than 20 shots over the course of a 7th Ward attack on Monday afternoon that killed one man and sent a teen to the hospital with injuries.
Evidence markers were scattered over the 1300 block of Annette Street after the shooting, which happened around 4 p.m. Police said that when they arrived on the scene, they found a man suffering from multiple gunshots wounds to his body. He was taken to the hospital, where he died.
Just a few blocks away at the corner of Claiborne Avenue and Laharpe Street, police found a 17-year-old boy who had been shot to his side, according to New Orleans Police Department spokesman Ofc. Garry Flot. He was taken into surgery.
Larry Cangelosi, whose family runs a convenience store just down the block from the shooting, said he had repeatedly called police to complain about drug dealers on the corner.
Cangelosi claimed that police have always refused to respond to his complaints, telling him drug crimes are a low priority given the force’s manpower, which has fallen from 1,500 five years ago to around 1,135 now.
“They have no police,” said Cangelosi. “You can’t have a city without police. Let’s face it.”
He believed the shooting might somehow be related to the Aug. 6 killing of Irving Rogers, 27, just a block away in the 1700 block of North Robertson Street.
Homicide Detective Debra Normand is leading the investigation and can be reached at (504) 658-5300.
