Jefferson Parish sheriff’s deputies identified the man who was shot and killed in a River Ridge home early Sunday as he tried to force his ex-girlfriend from the home of her current boyfriend.

Bobby Edler, 44, 6901 Veterans Blvd., Metairie, was shot to death by Robert Esteves inside Esteves’ home in the 9000 block of Sharla Drive, said Glen Boyd, a spokesman for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office. Esteves was wounded in the shootout.

Esteves is the boyfriend of Karen Collins, 35, Metairie, who also is Edler’s ex-girlfriend, the Sheriff’s Office has said.

Collins called the Sheriff’s Office about 4:30 a.m. Sunday to say her ex-boyfriend was shooting at her current boyfriend, Boyd has said in a news release.

Collins reported that she was out of the house and inside a neighbor’s home. When deputies arrived, they found Edler lying in a pool of blood just inside the door. He was unconscious and pronounced dead at the scene.

Collins told deputies that she and Esteves returned home from a Christmas party and went to bed. Somehow, Edler entered Esteves’ home, got into the bedroom and, at gunpoint, ordered Collins out of bed.

Edler got her to the front door. Esteves got a shotgun and fired at least twice at the ex-boyfriend from the stairs overlooking the foyer. Edler returned multiple rounds before he was fatally wounded at the front door, Boyd said.

Esteves sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his arm. He was treated at a local hospital. Deputies took Collins in for more questioning.

The matter is still under investigation, and no charges have been filed at this point, Boyd said.
