Jefferson Parish officials and members of American Legion Post 397, Harahan/River Ridge, will hold a Memorial Day ceremony to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.
The event will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Veterans Memorial Square at the intersection of Causeway and Veterans Memorial boulevards in Metairie.
The event is open to the public.
Orchid show, sale
The New Orleans Orchid Society will have its annual show and sale at Lakeside Shopping Center from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. May 29-30 and from noon to 4:30 p.m. May 31.
The theme of the show is “A Symphony of Orchids,” and it will feature 20 exhibits of blooming orchid plants from 14 vendors from Louisiana, Florida and Texas.
There also will be a raffle of several orchid plants, donated by vendors, at 3 p.m. on May 31.

Art show benefits veterans
Veterans Housing Outreach Ministries, which houses, feeds, clothes and creates jobs for the homeless, the disabled, seniors and female veterans, is sponsoring a free art show and exhibition to support homeless veterans in Jefferson Parish at the Old Metairie Library, 2350 Metairie Road.
A reception will be held from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the library.
“The display of artwork is of one of our homeless veterans, artist William Mullany, as well various artists who have chosen to team up with us to help support homeless veterans,” said Lisa Carey, spokesperson for the ministry. “The artists are delighted by the exposure.”
The exhibit will remain on display throughout May during regular library hours, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
“As Veterans Housing Outreach Ministries grows, the organization will develop and organize a variety of public service projects that will transform the community,” Carey said.
The John Ehret High School class of 1981 will hold 34th class reunion events June 5-6. The theme is “A Taste of New Orleans.”
Activities include a meet and greet at 8 p.m. June 5 at Celebrations, 2700 Gen. DeGaulle Drive, New Orleans, and a New Orleans streetcar tour on June 6. The location and time for this will be decided at a later date.

Contest winners named
The winners of the Nonpoint Source Stormwater Pollution and Solutions Poster and Essay Contest were announced at the 15th annual Stormwater Poster and Essay Awards Ceremony held last month at the Kenner City Park Pavilion.
Jefferson Parish students depicted or described at least one source of nonpoint source pollution and presented potential solutions. Nonpoint sources, such as leakage of automotive fluids, fertilizers and pesticides, pet wastes and other hazards are some of the primary causes of stormwater pollution.
Winning posters are on display at the Jefferson Parish East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon Ave., Metairie. It will move to the West Bank Regional Library, 2751 Manhattan Blvd., Harvey, on June 23 and will remain on display until Aug. 25.
First-place winners were Aisha Siddiqui, Chantel Collins, Cassidi Killen, Isabella Pita, Darbie Tullier and Asia Noah.
Second-place contestants were Joseph Bates, Sneha Mondal, Madeline Marsalone, Ava Lincoln, Caroline Neumeyer and Jamie Wingerter,
Third-place finishers were Addison Reynolds, Meghan Gaffney, Benjamin Pethe, Veronica Suazo, Connor Folse and Khanh Nguyen.
Honorable mention went to Lauryn Graf, Abigail DiCristina, Allison Goldman, Shayna Mayer, Litzzy Gonzales, Ben Mayer, Rebekah Haase, Kylee Ponthieux, Kristen Punch, Sophia Boehm, Tyler Herlache and Jayde Arnoult.
The Louisiana SPCA will hold a pet adoption from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Clearview Shopping Center, 4436 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie.
