The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office began moving jail inmates out of harms way and releasing some held for less serious charges Friday morning in anticipation of Tropical Storm Karen.

In a prepared statement, Sheriff Marlin Gusman said 432 inmates were removed from the temporary housing units, or “tents,” at the Orleans Parish Prison and taken to State Department of Public Safety and Corrections facilities elsewhere.

The sheriff’s office also released 70 prisoners held on lesser charges, and said the jail would stop accepting new inmates held for municipal or traffic violations, except those involving weapons or domestic violence.
