Cabrini High School’s softball team concluded its 2015 season by reaching the LHSAA AAAA state semifinals, narrowly losing 1-0 to North Desoto High School, the eventual state champions.
In the Crescents’ semifinal game loss, North Desoto’s leadoff hitter opened with a triple and scored on a sacrifice bunt by their next hitter. The Crescents rallied in several innings, including loading the bases in the last inning with 1 out, but they were never able to score, leaving nine runners on base.
Cabrini ended the year with a 15-11 record, with all 11 losses coming to playoff teams, eight of which reached the quarterfinals or better in their respective divisions.
“We believe that in order to prepare for a run in the playoffs you have to play the best of the best,” coach Shannon Austin said. “Our players work hard day in and day out to give themselves the best opportunity to compete and win every game.”
The Crescents were led by junior pitcher Karli Perque with an ERA of 1.20 and hitters Hayley Kennair with a batting average of .438, Katelyn Jalbert .377, Christie Runnels .377, Hailey Sculthorp .352, Karli Perque .333 and Alexis Groce .324.
The 2015 team loses six seniors but returns six starters for 2016.
