A 19-year-old man was shot to death Monday at the intersection of Canal and South Rampart streets, police said.

A police officer in the area heard gunfire and responded to the intersection around 5:40 p.m., the New Orleans Police Department said in a news release. Seconds later, the officer saw the victim lying on the sidewalk, shot in the chest.

The man was transported to an area hospital, where he later died.
