A man walking his dog in Gert Town Wednesday morning found himself faced with a rude surprise: a pre-teen toting what looked like a grown-up gun.
NOPD Officer Gary Flot said an 11-year-old walked up to the man near the corner of Short and Forshey streets around 7:45 a.m. and asked for money. When the 39-year-old victim refused, the alleged attempted armed robber produced what looked like a black handgun. The man disarmed the child and followed him as he fled to Magnolia Discount.
After a canvass of the area, police picked up the suspect at a bus stop near the intersection of South Carrollton Avenue and Forshey Street. They discovered that what looked like a real weapon was actually a replica BB handgun.
The child was taken to the Juvenile Detention Center and charged with one count of attempted armed robbery.
