New Orleans police arrested a 13-year-old boy Sunday morning, just minutes after they said he had robbed a 53-year-old man in New Orleans East.

The theft happened at Bullard Avenue and Hayne Boulevard, police said.

The victim told police that a teenager approached him on a bicycle about 11:20 a.m. and snatched $30 in cash out of his hand. The teen then fell off his bike as he was trying to flee.

The man ran after him, but the boy pulled out a gun and told him to get back before pedaling away on Hayne Boulevard.

About five minutes later, Officer Stephen Magee was on his way to the robbery scene when he saw a teenager matching the description of the robber and detained him at Lafourche Street and Hayne. The victim identified the teen as the person who robbed him.

Police said they learned the teen had used a BB gun. He was booked on one count of armed robbery.

Detectives are investigating whether the boy is responsible for similar armed robberies reported in eastern New Orleans.
