The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation will open the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center, the nonprofit organization’s new education and community facility, with a community open house from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.

A free Heritage School of Music holiday concert will follow at 7 p.m.

The Heritage Center, at 1225 N. Rampart St., will be the permanent home of the Don “Moose” Jamison Heritage School of Music, a free program that began operation on local university campuses. The facility also will serve as a community center.

“We expect this facility — which is located at the gateway to the Treme neighborhood — to give a major boost to the cultural and economic development of not only Treme but our entire city,” said Don Marshall, executive director of the Jazz & Heritage Foundation.

The Wein Jazz & Heritage Center is named in honor of George Wein and his late wife, Joyce, the producers who helped launch the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in 1970.
