Jefferson Volunteers for Family and Community recently presented Joanne Bayer College Scholarships to students who met the requirements for academics, extracurricular activities and community service.

The recipients are Jennifer Marks, of Marrero; Emily Oncale, of Marrero, a student at Holy Cross College preparing for medical school; Hunter Picard, of Marrero, a nursing major at Holy Cross; Dane Chalin, of Gretna, an LSU student preparing for medical school; and Aimee Chalin, of Gretna, who is in Loyola Law School.

Scholarship Chairwoman Diane Nielsen presented the scholarships at the Aug. 4 JVFC council meeting at Oakdale Playground in Gretna.

Jefferson Volunteers for Family and Community Inc. has seven clubs and 104 members. It is an affiliate of the Louisiana VFC and donates thousands of hours of community service each year to schools, libraries, nursing homes and hospitals. It contributes money to Jefferson 4-H, Girl Scouts Louisiana East and schools in Jefferson Parish, and awards up to five JVFC Joanne Bayer College Scholarships annually. Its Raise-A-Reader literacy program reaches more than 3,000 families each year. Its Birthday Book program gives away 150 to 200 new books to kindergarten and first-grade students at Leo Kerner Elementary School.
