A former Treme high school teacher was arrested Thursday for allegedly having sex on two occasions with a 16-year-old female student.

Dominic Lewis, 32, was booked on counts of carnal knowledge of a juvenile and indecent behavior with a juvenile, according to police records.

He was arrested about 8:15 a.m. in the 500 block of Poydras Street.

Lewis was a biology teacher at Joseph S. Clark High School on North Derbigny Street until he was fired last week.

According to an arrest warrant, NOPD Detective Corey M. Lymous began investigating Lewis last week after a school resource officer reported an allegation of sex between a male teacher and a female student.

The officer told Lymous he had been notified by the school’s administration and the student’s guardians about inappropriate text messages sent between the student and Lewis.

The messages were sent from Lewis’s work phone to a phone he had purchased for the student. They were sent from a contact in the girl’s phone labeled “nice guy” and appeared to be about a sexual encounter, according to the warrant.

Lymous tried to question Lewis, but Lewis discontinued the interview to speak with an attorney, the warrant said.

The victim was transported to a hospital for a sexual assault examination.

There she told investigators she and Lewis had sex on two occasions. The first incident occurred near Pan American Stadium in City Park following a Clark football game, according to the girl. She said the two also had sex on a Sunday in Holy Cross, near the St. Claude Avenue bridge.

The girl wasn’t able to recall the specific dates of the incidents, according to the warrant.

Lewis was booked into Orleans Parish Prison, where he is being held on $150,000 bail.

Dominique Harris, director of communications for FirstLine Schools, which operates Clark, said it was Lewis’ first year teaching at the school.

Harris said that when school officials were notified of the allegations, they investigated them and terminated Lewis on Oct. 16.

“Our kids’ safety is of utmost importance to us,” Harris said. “We did not let the fact that he had not been arrested stop us from terminating his employment.”

The incident is the second time in a month that a teacher in the New Orleans area has been accused of having sex with a student.

Two Destrehan High School female teachers were arrested in late September on charges they had sex with a 16-year-old male student.
