The Gem and Mineral Society of Louisiana will hold its monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 14 in the University of New Orleans Geology Department Building. The group meets on the second Monday of each month.

The society will hold a gem and mineral show Oct. 16-18 at the Best Western Landmark Hotel, 2601 Severn Ave., in Metairie. Show hours will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $6 for adults, with discounts for students, military and members. Scouts in uniform and children under 12 are free.

The show will feature dealers exhibiting precious gem stones, Louisiana opals, minerals, fossils, beads and jewelry. Members of the society will demonstrate jewelry making and cabochon cutting. Several displays will feature fluorescent minerals and dinosaur bones. Specials for children include cabochons polishing and rock grab bags.

Ballast stone cabochons will be featured displays. The grand prize is a sculptural specimen of Lower Miocene-aged petrified wood.

The Gem and Mineral Society of Louisiana, located in New Orleans, is a member of both the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies and the Southeast Federation of Mineralogical Societies.
