1 sentenced, 1 pleads guilty in heroin ring
A St. John the Baptist Parish man was sentenced Thursday to 12 years in federal prison for distributing more than 100 grams of heroin.
Ricky Marquette Bozeman, 37, of LaPlace, also faces four years of supervised release after serving his sentence.
A second man, Vincent Jones, 45, of New Orleans, pleaded guilty Thursday to conspiring to distribute more than a kilogram of heroin. He faces at least 20 years behind bars, prosecutors said.
Bozeman and Jones were among 12 defendants charged in a 23-count indictment last year. Authorities said the drug trafficking organization distributed at least 15 kilograms of heroin in the New Orleans area.
“Heroin is leading to alarming levels of violence and overdose deaths in our communities,” U.S. Attorney Kenneth Polite said in a statement.
Candle blamed for fire at N.O. East apartment
A family escaped a fire in New Orleans East on Thursday that firefighters blamed on a scented candle.
The blaze began after 3 a.m. at an apartment at 4450 Gawain Drive. Seven people were inside the apartment at the time but managed to escape through a back window just before firefighters arrived.
An 8-year-old boy cut his leg while going through the window and was treated at the scene before being taken to the hospital, authorities said. The other residents and one neighbor also were taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
The New Orleans Fire Department extinguished the blaze before it could destroy the complex, though five other units received smoke damage.
