Tuesday night killing believed drug-related

Police believe the killing of a 40-year-old man in the Lower 9th Ward on Tuesday night was related to drugs — and they have a witness.

The unidentified victim was shot in the head at Alabo and Marais streets about 6:15 p.m. He died at a hospital.

“We believe it’s narcotics-related,” NOPD Criminal Investigations Division Cmdr. Doug Eckert said at a Comstat meeting Wednesday. “We have a good witness. He was in the vehicle with the victim.”

Police said they recovered a pistol from the scene.

Homicide Detective Andrew Waldron is investigating the case. He can be reached at (504) 658-5300.

Coroner releases name of homicide victim

Coroner Jeffrey Rouse has released the identity of a man who New Orleans police said died at the hands of a neighbor Friday night.

Rouse said Karl Taylor, 55, died of asphyxia due to manual strangulation, the apparent result of an altercation with a 43-year-old male neighbor.

Witnesses told police that the neighbor intervened after Taylor punched and kicked his 25-year-old girlfriend during an argument outside their house.

Police said they believe the homicide may have been justifiable. They said they would refer the results of their investigation to the District Attorney’s Office.

11-year-old booked in BB gun holdup

A man walking his dog in Gert Town on Wednesday morning found himself faced with a preteen toting what looked like a grown-up gun.

NOPD Officer Garry Flot said an 11-year-old boy walked up to the 39-year-old man near Short and Forshey streets about 7:45 a.m. and asked for money. When the man refused, the boy produced what looked like a black handgun. The man disarmed the child and followed him as he fled to a nearby store.

After a canvass of the area, police picked up a suspect at a bus stop on South Carrollton Avenue. They discovered that what looked like a real weapon was actually a replica BB handgun.

The child was taken to the Juvenile Detention Center and booked on one count of attempted armed robbery.
