Coroner identifies man found floating in canal
The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office has identified a man whose bullet-riddled body was found Sunday afternoon in the Industrial Canal as Ellery Boyd.
Boyd, 35, of New Orleans, was shot multiple times and likely had been dead three or four days before his body was found floating in the waterway, authorities said.
Police have not identified a suspect or motive in his death.
Man eludes officers after chase in 7th Ward
A man who led New Orleans police on a chase through the 7th Ward remained at large Wednesday.
Officers went to Kerlerec Street and North Claiborne Avenue about 10:50 a.m. to investigate a report of gunfire. They found an empty, bullet-riddled car at the corner.
Officers said they spotted a suspect and chased him, but he got away. They said he tossed away a gun and drugs during the chase.
McDonogh No. 35 High School was placed on lockdown for a short time as a precautionary measure during the chase, police said.
OMV employee accused of stealing
An employee of the Office of Motor Vehicles in Chalmette has been arrested on suspicion that she stole hundreds of dollars in fees customers paid for insurance violations.
Juanita Rainey, 50, of Slidell, was arrested on charges of felony theft and malfeasance in office, according to State Police.
Detectives began to look into Rainey after they received a tip about criminal activity at the Chalmette OMV office.
The investigation found Rainey was able to pocket more than $500 by using an office computer to alter the amounts customers owed to show a zero balance, authorities said.
Additional charges could be brought against Rainey, State Police said.
Two suspects arrested in shooting in Reserve
Two men have been arrested in connection with a shooting last week in Reserve.
Jontrell Cosey, 24, of Reserve, was booked with attempted second-degree murder and aggravated criminal damage to property.
Kody Duhe, 22, of Garyville, was booked with being a principal to attempted second-degree murder and aggravated second-degree battery.
St. John the Baptist Parish authorities said the men were behind a double shooting May 6 on East 13th Street.
Teen shot in Lower Garden District
A 16-year-old male was shot in the shoulder Wednesday afternoon in the Lower Garden District, New Orleans police said.
The shooting happened a little after 5 p.m. in the 900 block of Josephine Street.
The victim was taken to the hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, said Officer Frank Robertson, a Police Department spokesman.
Police pull man’s body from Mississippi River
New Orleans police Wednesday morning pulled the body of an unidentified man from the Mississippi River in lower Algiers.
A tugboat captain spotted the body floating in the water near the 10500 block of Patterson Drive, police said.
Police reported the sighting a little after 10 a.m.
The death will remain unclassified until the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office can conduct an autopsy, said Officer Garry Flot, a Police Department spokesman.
