Update at 7: 15 p.m. Saturday: Police canceled the arrest warrant for Jerry Harris after concluding he was not the shooter. A check of his ankle monitor records showed he was not in the area at the time of the incident, police said.
Update at 12:05 a.m.: The New Orleans Police Department has secured an arrest warrant for 17-year-old Jerry Harris in connection with the double shooting.
Gunfire erupted Friday afternoon in the French Quarter in a shooting incident that wounded at least two people and left police scrambling to locate surveillance video.
Police said a lone shooter approached a Nissan Altima near the corner of Dauphine and Conti streets about 4:30 p.m. and opened fire on the vehicle, wounding the two men inside.
Police Superintendent Michael Harrison said it was possible the victims returned fire with a handgun that investigators later recovered inside the vehicle. The victims’ injuries were not considered to be life-threatening, he said.
“It’s a pretty brazen act,” Harrison added. “No one can get into the mind of a subject to figure out what they’re going to do at any given time, but what we can say is we had an officer who was extremely close who heard the gunshots.”
The Nissan Altima stopped a few blocks away at Bienville and Basin streets. Investigators scoured the vehicle for evidence and took photos of the damage caused by the shooting, which included a completely shot-out driver’s side window and a rear passenger window that also appeared to have been pierced by a bullet.
A woman who apparently is related to one of the victims approached the vehicle at one point and became distraught when she learned her relative had been wounded and taken to a local hospital.
Several tourists interviewed in the French Quarter seemed unfazed by the shooting or else had mistaken the gunshots for fireworks.
One man became visibly frustrated about not being able to make a dinner reservation due to a police cordon.
A visitor from Scotland said he had become accustomed to such violence while living in the Atlanta area.
