As business owners and residents of the French Quarter prepare to hold an anti-crime rally Tuesday evening, police are investigating an armed robbery at a bar that happened Monday night on the edge of the Quarter.

The owner of Buffa’s Lounge in the 1000 block of Esplanade Avenue said two men walked into the business and robbed the front bar and a customer around 10:30 p.m., demanding money from the cash register and the customer and then the suspects took money and ran off.

The men, however, never reached the back bar where more customers were listening to live music. They were no reports of any injuries.

The armed robbery comes as business owners and residents are saying they’ve had enough with the crime that has plagued their neighborhood. A recent string of stabbings, armed robberies and muggings in the French Quarter have residents and service workers on edge. Signs saying, “Caution: Walk in Large Groups,” have begun popping up in the neighborhood.

State Police troopers ended their patrols in New Orleans Monday after helping the New Orleans Police Department for several weeks, despite Mayor Mitch Landrieu’s request to have troopers here helping to patrol, permanently.

Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.
